PowerPoint

PowerPoint is a presentation program that allows users to build a presentation that engages the audience through a series of slides. Wood (2010, p. 4) states“The PowerPoint program provides various views and tools you can use to build a presentation that includes words, graphics and media.” It incorporates building an outline, choosing slide design and layout, adding content, text format, slide organising and running a slide show.
PowerPoint is a great tool for students to use when they are going to do a presentation to the class. It gives students added confidence and supports the oral component of a presentation. Lehman (2000, p. 1) states “PowerPoint is a graphics software that allows you to create visual aids for supporting a speaker’s presentation. The presentation can be projected on a screen using projection equipment or printed as transparencies acetates.”
Oulton (2007, p. 4) states “PowerPoint will allow you to:
 Gain and hold the audience’s attention
 Engage the audience in a communication process
 Help the audience to understand complex ideas and relationships
 Place ideas into short-term memory, which is clearly a prerequisite for placing ideas into long-term memory.”
In the classroom, PowerPoint is an effective tool to assist in students use of ICT’s as well as assisting learning across several other KLA’s. Eg. English – assisting with grammar and comprehension.
